Writing Coach

I teach writing one-on-one and in small groups.

To hire me, email: ConnerWrites at gmail.com

What I Offer::
Every writer has a different path. As your writing coach I can help you:
– Move from fragments of writing to polished, publishable work.
– Get on a regular writing schedule and develop better writing habits.
– Identify your strengths and emphasize them; find your weaknesses and work on them.
– Navigate the world of publishing.
– Develop your voice and confidence as a writer.
– Use writing as method of spiritual development.
– Get past writer’s block.
– Give you deadlines to meet for your personal writing projects.
– Start and finish a memoir, play, novel, or other long-form project.
– Reinvigorate your enjoyment in the writing process.

Why me?
I am a prolific and widely-published writer and have many years of experience as a writing teacher.

I taught literature, creative writing, and composition for three years at UMASS and also taught at Western New England College. In 2006, I was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award – the highest honor awarded for teaching at UMASS. I have six years of experience as a one-on-one and group writing coach.

My book about sex in history, science, and culture, Remaking Sex, will be released early 2015 from Disinformation Books.  I’m a weekly columnist for Patti Stanger (Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker) on her site, PattiKnows.com.  My writing appears and is featured in/on:

The Stranger, Salon, Slate, The Advocate, The Rumpus, Headmaster Magazine, Andrew Sullivan’s The Dish, Reality Sandwich, Disinformation, The Wild River Review – and anthologies, including Best Sex Writing 2013 (Cleis Press), Best Gay Stories 2012 (Lethe Press), Occupy Consciousness: Essays from the Coming Insurrection (Evolver), Lynn Margulis: Scientific Rebel (Chelsea Green), and Exploring the Edge Realms of Consciousness (North Atlantic/Evolver Editions).

I’ve written and appeared on my own web show:  Logo TV’s NewNowNext.com show, Ask the Sexpert, have presented lectures at a variety of organizations and schools, and was the first gay adult performer to speak at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  I run and facilitate classes and lectures on spirituality, sex, sexuality, pornography, and sex in culture.  More on me here.

I’m also an all-around nice guy. We’ll have a comfortable and fun experience. I’ll read your work and won’t hold back on my critique and praise – but will challenge you without hurting your feelings. You’ll feel encouraged and excited to write more.

“When I first contacted Conner, I was looking for a kind of writers’ personal trainer–someone who would keep me focused, disciplined and productive. He provided all that, and so much more.
His notes were sharp and insightful, his suggestions practical and on-point, his approach supportive, encouraging, good-humoured and always respectful. He is not afraid to be bold and say what a writer
really needs to hear. I recommend him highly, and look forward to working with him on my future projects.” – David Demchuk, playwright.

“Conner not only provided incredibly thorough feedback on my writing, but also brought it into a new focus.  A year after our work together, I still always hear his voice in my head when I sit down to write.   Working with Conner means centering writing in your life.  He will very sweetly and gently call bullshit on all the excuses you’ve been using to avoid actually writing ; while giving you lessons, practices, and tools to turn your ideas into stories.” – Cyd St. Vincent, essayist, activist.

Fees + Other Info:
I offer many different writing packages at reasonable rates. Each rate is customized to meet your goals and budget.

We can meet in person or via Skype, with as many meetings as you need per week.

I read your story about the man who committed suicide. You are very good writer and so right in your thoughts and how you addressed the issues. I no nothing about porn stars at all, but one thing I do know is that we are all human and we all have a need to feel wanted, loved, and cherished. I write a lot about death. I think it is because I am/was an RN for 30 plus years until I found out about my brain tumor. Take care of yourself and God Bless you , Alesia

    Dear Conner,
A really stimulating and beautifully-written blog. I’m confronting my own preconceptions about porn actors as I write..! Thankyou
